Vella gulf, where a "tokyo express" of 4 IJN destroyers (Hagikaze, Arashi, Kawakaze, and Shigure) running supplies at night was ambushed by a USN destroyer squadron consisting of Dunlap, Craven, Maury, Lang, Sterett, and Stack. The USN destroyers spotted the IJN destroyers with radar, and sailed between the IJN destroyers and an island to conceal their silhouettes. The USN destroyer opened with torpedos, and held fire until the torpedo hit, since early gunfire had alerted another IJN fleet to torpedos at the battle of Tassafaronga. Shigure was the only IJN destroyer to spot the ambush and evade in time.

First battle in which American DDs worked separately from cruisers, and the first battle where USN Destroyer-launched torps were used decisively. This would be repeated two months later at Cape St. George.

Interesting thing here is that this is pretty much the point that the Americans started using Japanese night-battling tactics.

That's the problem with being a sole survivor, it's mostly through luck and you often end up feeling that being alive isn't fair.

DD-401 Maury was the flagship of the USS ambush fleet in Vanilla Gulf Battle. So that damn Destroyer Water Oni is actually based on her.

Well... yes and no. You could say that many boss abyssals were based on key USN ships in those battles but they have had shocking physical similarities with the IJN ships that were sunk in said battles. In Destroyer Water Oni's case, she looks very similar to Hagikaze, who is dropped from the boss node AND was sunk in said battle. It brings to mind Plasma-chan wishing to save both friend and enemy ... before unleashing a crapton of damage on an enemy abyssal.
