If popular culture is anything to go by, Japanese vending machines are the most fiendishly complex devices to operate known to man.
I did get the drink I wanted out of one once. I feel like a genius.

Put in coin / swipe cash card, and then choose the drink you want.
Doesn't seem that difficult.

The only time I get frustrated with vending machine is when using one in my home country because it only accept mint quality paper money (we don't have many coins with practical value beyond small changes).
That's the time I think how nice the Japanese still using so many coins.

The only time I've messed up is when they change the line up - which they do at least twice a year, moving from mostly hot <> cold drinks; or when they put a new drink in the machine - and you hit the same button you always do without thinking.

Yay, hot red bean soup instead of coffee. What a way to start the day.

swipe card? in my country we either use paper money or a tapping cash card(those kind of card you use to pay for train by tapping them on the scanner), although i like use the tapping one more because it didn't take more problem to pay.
