Does Nasu give a reason why Nasu-Andersen writes Suffering and Bittersweet Endings? I know why RL-Andersen did it (An excuse he made up rather than admit he was nowhere as cracked up to be as he deluded himself to be on the former and a miscomseption on what gives a person the right to enter the heavans on the latter) but not Nasu-Andersen.

His mother worked hard in poverty so he could get a good school but he couldn't repay her as she died before he was well to do (an inspiration for the Matchstick Girl) and his love is one-sided as they (it isn't clear who) married off and he died clutching the letter that confessed his feeling (an inspiration for Little Mermaid).

RL-Andersen was notorious for being an arrogant snob who kept trying to feed other people painfully ovius lies about himself. He was at one point thrown out of a party for repeatively lying to everyone by saying he was the illegitement son of the crown-prince of Denmark.
Also "The Ugly Duckling" was written as part of another lie, this one being his way of saying that he was "a cygnet" (A late bloomer) in terms of looks.

You're asking for the Nasuverse version of Andersen. Those things I said are really in his profile. There are some indications that the reason why only Andersen of all Three Great Authors (himself, Aesop, and Grimm brothers) wrote original stories instead of based on some previous folklore is because those stories are coming from personal experiences.
But despite the general cynical nature of the stories, Andersen is also hopeful his characters are having a good end (in his opinion) even though at first glance it's not. Matchstick Girl was frozen to death, but she was happy to see those visions and dreams for the future. Little Mermaid turned into sea foam, but she didn't kill the prince and became a spirit that always bring smile to children's faces. Ugly Duckling too, if we're not seeing the on-your-face interpretation and looking at the context that Andersen was piss poor and his mother died trying to pay for his school, and yet his name is now in the Throne of Heroes.
The difference between Nursery Rhyme and Andersen is their opinion of literature is based on different philosophies. If Nursery Rhyme is often nonsensical and whimsical adventures that Caroll was told to entertain his friends' children, Andersen's stories are his hopes against his own cynical nature. Of course they will have different opinion of what a good end is. At least, they're better than Dumas, who genuinely think that he's the greatest thing ever despite being a plagiarist.
