Japan categorized her as a fleet carrier, the same with Hiyou and Jun'you. The label was relatively a USN kind of thing, since a carrier that could only carry half the plane load compared to a typical one in their fleet(i.e 90-100) was labeled a CVL. And if they count captured Russian battleships in their numbering pattern.

Also how far back one starts the numbering. The Americans went back to USS Indiana (retroactively given the hull number BB-1 around the time of her decommissioning). USS Maine and USS Texas were not counted (USS Maine being given ACR-1 as an Armored Cruiser) and second-class coastal defense battleship USS Texas never getting a number).

Assuming they don't count the Russian ships and other war prizes as BB, and the Kongos and other battlecruisers as BC, and the pre-dreadnought Fuji as the first ship, while counting laid down battleships as part of the list, than Yamato is BB-21. Kaga would be ex-BB-20 assuming her sister ship Tosa was the first of the class and this BB-19.

Hiyou and Jun'you are the odd cases, since they were considered CVs both by the US and the Japanese. They are also big (~220m), with a matching displacement* (24 150 tons), which is far heavier than Souryuu (16 200 tons) and Hiryuu (17 600 tons).

(*Displacement values are given in term of standard displacement [not counting fuel and boiler water], not normal displacement)

Ryuujou is definitely a CVL. She was purpose-built to exploit a loophole in the Washington Naval Treaty which didn't technically consider ships under 10 000 tons to be actual carriers (the loophole was patched out soon). RJ displaces a mere 8000 tons (sans fuel and boiler water), half (or far less than half) of the usual contemporary carrier displacement.

I mean, technically, I don't think the IJN formally classified ships as "light carriers" (they all get lumped under the "seiki kuubo" label instead), but RJ is clearly "light", and was purpose-built to be light (and accidentally top heavy) as part of one of the many loophole-avoiding shenanigans favored by Imperial Japan.

Oh this topic huh. I remember a note about Destroyers once just nothing but numbers. But of course it is so unpopular to both crewmember and officers that they were easily confused. Hence they start using names associated with natural phenomena of weather, sky and sea.

To make it short, it's best they did it with style.

Wait is this why she looks noticeably younger (beyond bust size) than the other carriers?

Compared to just numbers, actual names are easier to remember even to the illiterate. It could also give the men a sense of belonging and kinship to their ships. For example, one would be more proud to call himself a crew-member of the Ayanami instead of someone from Destroyer No. 45.

All ships beside the number, they all have name. Example for Wickes-class Destroyer:
DD-75 - USS Wickes
DD-76 - USS Philip
.....
DD-131 - USS Buchanan

Most people won't know USS Philip or USS Buchanan is older (61 destroyer of Wickes-class, lolz), thus the designation number do the job.
As same as SHBB-01 Yamato and SHBB-02 Musashi, CVB-01 Shinano.

PS: of course I know during war, for many reason, that later number was laid down and finished sooner, but in document, their designation number are still give their order : )).

The Office of Naval Intelligence did classify the Kongô-class as battleships (BB) in their ID documents.
