Oh, well. Kinda hope for Yamato's counterpart. But still good to see her at least.

Also.looking at her design. I have a weird feeling that we might got a lively Nagamon' counterpart insted.

Iowa doesn't have an official state drink.
Most Iowan drink beer, with Dickinson county being the most drunk of all.
The best selling brand liquor wise (aside for beer) is Black Velvet.

I don't think I can handle admirals inserting "USA", "freedom" and "liberty" senselessly either. xD

EDIT: Do you see that English text below the art? That's exactly how a weeaboo sounds/reads like (retarded). Japanese have done that for decades so it looks kind of "normal", it doesn't mean it's normal in reverse. Please don't grammar like that ever.

You can also count "make America great again" to that list. Japanese haven't yet realized it, but I am seeing this flying around in everywhere else (not just 4chan or reddit or Himeuta)

Meanwhile, this Iowa's motif seems to be "USA supermodel/beauty pageant winner".

And they're both even drawn by the same artist.

I'm not in love with her design but I definitely don't hate it really. Honestly I'm just excited she's here and that she said "us".

I was kinda hoping they'd get an English speaking VA for her...

And while her personality doesn't fit the calm, battle-hardened lady I was expecting, it does make sense in hindsight. She's the youngest battleship in the game, being launched in 1942, and she only has her WWII equipment so it makes sense for her to be immature here. Although that wouldn't really explain how Kongou, the oldest ship in the game, acts...

Iowa's design so closely matches that of the last link you posted that I'm convinced said image (or one like it) was the inspiration for her character design. It actually makes her design better in my eyes since it means her design has an actual basis in history.

Hmm, on closer examination, I guess it is.

However, considering how risqué the rest of the actual WW2 pinups and paraphernalia can get - seeing the German illustrations on their Tigerfibel, aka their Tiger tank operating manual, was quite illuminating, and of course bomber nose art of various sexy women - having Iowa be of similar disposition in clothing still makes sense.

Yes, which is why I didn't object to the spirit of it. Japanese were quite surprised by the sexy nose-cone art of crashed superfortresses. Especially the men.

I was referring to the fact that she guzzles oil, and back then most of the oil the US used came from Texas and surrounding states.

The most powerful anti-air unit, the most accurate surface unit, and the fastest battleship ever built. All of this is more or less reflected in her stats, in credit to Kadokawa.

Hmmm, at first I thought it was Shimada who drew Iowa but then I looked again and knew that it was Shizuma's work. It's kinda funny how similar their artwork is in Kancolle until you notice some weird shit. Might be why Shizuma keeps drawing extra faces on whatever secondary mascot items the girls have.

Can't help but feel a bit....disappointed cause I was hoping for a new artist or something. Not asking for a great artist, just someone new and probably a new way and perspective on new ships. Not that I hate Shizuma, he probably tries but just....someone new and something new.

That being said, she's blonde. Shit, at this rate I have a feeling all the future US ships would just be the usual Western stereotypes.

The german ships were pretty stereotypically German though.
Gloomy, pale skin, Aryan with Max being the only one that was somewhat different because she didn't have blonde/white hair but that's not saying much. Maybe it's just that they're all drawn by one artist that just makes them all look boring.

The italian ships on the other hand I have to agree were much more different since it was by a different artist, which was why I was hoping that a different artist would draw for the American ships.

Well, I still hoping that if there are more future US ships that they would hire new artists. Otherwise I expect at least one of the US ships to have an American flag bikini or a cowboy hat or something equally stupid, but hopefully that won't happen.

Almost everything can be said the same about the Yamato outside of the Battle of Leyte Gulf (which was brutally marred by a poor command decision to withdraw).

The game has always taken absurd lengths to hype the performance of the ships versus their actual record.

There are still some differences between the two. Iowa was not quite as much of a gas hog and she took part in a lot more action than Yamato, mostly carrier escort and shore bombardment. However, the biggest difference between the two is their current elevation.

The Americans didn't have to worry about oil though, since they were the number one producer on the planet in that decade. Other countries had oil as a scarce war resource and it was in limited qualities for the military for the most part. In the United States? Cars, and more cars. Oil run turbines for power and industry. The much of the fleet converted to oil burning. Oil everywhere.

Metals and rubber were the American's problems. Rubber because a lot of the sources were in or near the war zones, and metal because we were building a gigantic military to come over and crush Nazi Germany, and then Japan. Also a huge number of transports and freighters to outdo the U-boats ability to sink them.

I'm reasonably sure the text should actually translate to, if you want to keep context and structure, more or less, (Their engrish parts are in caps, and use a drawling accent)
"HI! AH'm IOWA-class battleship IOWA. YOU this fleet's ADMIRAL huh?"...and the rest I have no idea as I can't read kana.

That's if Japanese grammar is like Chinese (which it should be given kanji is literally Chinese characters). This both retains structure and probably is accurate to the text (though I can't read kana, I do know that messing up I and Me is fairly common for people not too great at English)

Modern Japanese grammar is nothing like Chinese. Just because they share part of a writing system doesn't mean that they're anything alike. They're not even in the same language family. That's like saying that Basque and English grammar are the same since they share the Roman alphabet.

Modern Japanese and Modern Chinese share many lexical similarities, yes, but sentence structure-wise Chinese is far closer to English than Japanese.

(And Chinese and English are dissimilar enough.)

Chinese is remarkably devoid of grammar, compared to most other languages. Almost all words lack inflection (modification to words, e.g. swim/swims/swimming), so concepts like tense and number cannot be expressed grammatically.

Although that wouldn't really explain how Kongou, the oldest ship in the game, acts...

The last one is probably THE inspiration for Iowa's design

I must be delusional given how much I can figure out if there's a reasonable amount of Kanji in the text then.
    Oh well...
May I remind you that Latin alphabet is combinatoric while Chinese characters (admittedly partly combinatoric) are a vastly larger number of mostly self-contained blocks? Of course this meant that the Chinese inventing the printing press was actually a harder work than a LAtin language would have had it due to the sheer number of wooden blocks needing to be carved... or maybe it was BECAUSE of all the characters that people got tired of writing stuff repeatedly and invented a press to do it????

    Hmm...

I wish comments could be added to pools, because this would go in "I will never see this the same way again".

For example, "I believe you have issues" (as in mental issues) is literally the exact same structure in English and Chinese.

Dutch is similar enough to English that I can usually hash out a (reasonably poor) understanding of a sentence well enough - but this doesn't mean that I can actually speak or read it. I can also do the same to Chinese, since I did enough Classical Japanese to have a basic grounding in Chinese grammar, but I'd never say that I can actually read Chinese.

History time! Japanese started using kanji for much the same reason that Korean did, in that the language spoken by the learned elite was classical Chinese - that's what they knew and that's what they used, so when it came to developing a writing system for their own languages, they based it off Chinese, taking over the characters wholesale.

All this leads to is the content words having quite a few 1:1 mappings (i.e. Nouns, verbs and adjectives), but without knowing how the words have been conjugated, getting a good understanding outside of fairly simple sentences becomes quite difficult; not to mention all the times that Japanese uses a different character than Chinese does for a similar/same concept. Japanese (used) to be classed as a language isolate, as is Korean and Basque, i.e. they have no known root for their development (A lot of Asian languages come from Chinese roots, and Romance languages are (currently) considered to come from Proto-Indo-european via Latin).

While Japan can be comprehended on the basis of root content words alone, once you get out of short, simple sentences and into longer ones with embedded clauses, it rapidly becomes impossible get a proper understanding. Or in short: vocabulary ≠ grammar. Without a grounding in grammar, it becomes just guessing as to how the words are being used (which is admittedly much, much, easier when there's pictures to go with the words)

Also, Latinate movable type is simpler than Chinese, but movable type is a fairly recent invention in printing technology - whole-page woodblock (and later metal) prints were around a long time previously - which makes the complexity a moot point.

I am reasonably sure the Chinese claimed to invent movable type, simply because character blocks made making movable type look good very easy compared to English where character widths differ (do you really want the same block width for l and O for example? It would look ugly in most fonts...)

Fairly recent when compared to solid-page printing. But yes, movable type was developed in China around 1000ADish, using ceramics; with metal typesetting coming in much later .(Gutenburg's press followed pretty soon after the Korean one though) However, due to the complexity of character-based languages, it was prohibitively expensive and overly fiddly, meaning that it didn't really take off until better metal machining techniques and tools became available. It took almost as long to compose a page out of movable type as it took to just do it woodblock, which meant that unless you were doing a large print run (which given the level of literacy, was fairly unlikely), there was no really impetus to use (and therefore develop further) movable type.

So while movable type was available, the vast majority of printing was still done in wood- (or metal-)block until fairly recently (in historical terms) in Asia.

Fun fact! The terms Upper Case and Lower Case come from typesetting, where capital letters tended to be in a box up top, and the smaller ones in the box on the bottom. Literally, in the Upper and Lower case.

The "no basis for uniform" part is something I disagree with, since for the most part it does seem based on the kind of risqué portrayals of US Navy uniforms seen in ads (even if the specific example provided in this very page is kind of in question).

Also, Kancolle's Iowa has the advantage of actually having elements of the ship she's based on when it comes to her design, so it's clear that she's supposed to be the USS Iowa as a girl, rather than the Pacific example of being "girls first, ship second" (Morgane's own words). Here's an excellent image showing Kancolle's Iowa's cues from the real life ship:

    http://i.imgur.com/f5wJAxe.png

In contrast, while Pacific's version of Iowa is impeccably designed, she really just gives off the impression of a woman who's simply named "Iowa".

Finally, you're talking "sense of restraint" in a game where fanservice is the norm. I mean, your own Enterprise example wears nothing but a bikini for her bottom, and "obligatory American stereotype" doesn't really apply to your USS Missouri example (long black hair and glasses isn't exactly an American stereotype). Finally, they just pepper all the guns and metal parts all over the ship, which is hardly an example of "restraint", whereas the Kancolle Iowa keeps the metal parts to a minimum while still being meaningful.

People really need to stop thinking it's a contest between two games trying to one up each other. It's not. Tanaka have his own idea of how to pace the game with new mechanics and new shipgirls. We can guess that KC devs want to avoid punishing the newbies while still keeping interest from the KC grognards. Look at other games, like F/GO, where new things, in limited edition, are released every few weeks to never be seen again (like how people who started this year in F/GO may not have a chance to get Scathach ever again, etc...)

KC was firstly intended as a IJN centric moe browser game, with an unexpected success where Allies eventually came into their planning because, well, they are out of IJN capital ships and its doubtful that veterans will enjoy having nothing but more Yuugumo or other trophy DDs.
