Before translation : Shigure "I'm disappointed in you guys.".

It would be funny if Kamio has to force himself to stop Shigure before she will go full berserk on those guys.

And Shigure snaps, just as expected.

So they're off duty seamen, too. That doesn't give them any excuse for being assholes, though. And/or picking on comrades, damnit.

Human nature, they can pick on anyone that they feel superior to but can't take it when they're on the receiving ends....(excluding those M kinds of course)

Can't help but feel they went after the perceived easy pickings among ship girls. Destroyers are for all practical purposes, like, 15 years old tops. Bullying kids who are legally forbidden from raising a hand against you? How low can you go? Would they have tried this with a battleship or carrier?

I recall a conversation between Inazuma and Shiranui where the former mentions there are bases with ship girls that don't treat them very well at all. I wonder how deep this anti-ship girl prejudice runs among normal humans.

In fairness, the "back at our base" part kind of implies that the ship girls there are treated more like robots than people, which helps to explain why these guys are furious to see ship girls "playing at being human".

We can only assume that there are two basic points of view: the girls are practically human, or they aren't. If the ship girls aren't human, their treatment doesn't much matter, outside of how it affects combat performance. If they ARE human, then a lot of ugly legal and ethical ramifications come up, like whether or not they should be forced to fight, or what should happen to decommissioned ship girls.

In other words, people who don't believe the ship girls are human have quite a lot to lose if society decides otherwise...especially if the ship girls decide to rebel. Paradoxical as it might seem, convincing the ship girls (and other humans) they aren't human might actually be much safer for 'real' humans, because it reduces the chances of the girls wanting to leave the military.

Ah, the "What Measure is a Non-Human" spin, I see. That's a big bag o'worms. One that's about to be spilled on the streets unless Kamio interrupts the party.

... shit I get this feeling that the base where those punks are stationed are routinely abused. Reiji only needs to break you in by training and you are already potential murder to the point where gutting the Sub Hime is just routine work.

So this means Reiji is actually decking Shigure for second thoughts of doubt in that ultimatum.

    Ah, the age old situation.

"LOL LETS PICK ON SOMETHIN THAT CAN KILL US"

    *seconds from being killed*

    "OH GOD WHYYYYYY"

Be grateful your genes aren't gonna be passed to the next generation, dumbasses.

(Of course in this story there's gonna prolly be the Admiral to restrain Shigure before she goes all Guts on them but seriously... what were you thinking, nameless idiot dudes?)

On the other hand, treating them as well as humans would make them less likely to suddenly go all murderous on the human race. You'd think it'd be a better idea to befriend the beings who are the ONLY things that can fight a threat to the human race instead of antagonizing them...

I think Shigure may have gone just a bit too far in fighting back against these dickheads leading to that dressing down you see at the start of this chapter. On the other hand, Admiral Reiji may be making that dressing down very public in order to placate some outside onlookers and may privately tell them, "Good work taking care of those assholes, though."

To be quite honest, I believe the reason Shigure is going to murder these punks is that they just plainly said, with words and actions, that they were going to gang rape Murasame.

I sincerely hope that wasn't their intention because if so that implies horrible things for the ship girls stationed at their naval base.

I'd think it would be the other way around. Reiji seems to be the type to not use humiliation as punishment, seen with when he lectured Yuudachi when she wrecked his sortie, and Shiratsuryu and Shimakaze when they got lost on the train.

Looks like Shigure wants to "befriend" them really good.

There's a specific trope for this: Bullying a Dragon. Read through the examples, there's a fuck ton of them, and at least half of them are the tragic backstory of someone who went on to be an omnicidal maniac villain. So, basically, suicidal stupidity by the mobs is more common in literature than you might think.

even if they were viewed as equipment i personally wouldn't abuse or attempt to pick a fight with a tank, even if i won it'd be at the cost of equipment likely more expensive and less expendable than i am

    The hell you want?
    That's your call, isn't it?
Us here in the 8th Squad are just rolling around on our day off too - if you're off, then you're coming with us!
I do think that would be the best policy to keep the peace between us.
You goddamed shitty scrap metal - you work for humans, and you're actually defying them? Fuckin' lacking in education, you are - nothing like at our base!
Guys, have you got a moment?
That's treason, ya'know? A shipgirl raisin' her hand against a human?
We've got things to do after this; I'm sorry, but you couldn't just make yourself scarce, could you?
...shit, she's going for the kill.
    Kya..
