I think it was Douglas Adams who described the difference between a wit and a comedy writer: a wit can say something funny right now, whereas a comedy writer can say something very funny a week from now.

Thus, a politician can give you bullshit on a moment's notice, whereas a SF writer can give you an enormous heap of elegant internally-consistent bullshit with some lead time.
