    Hang in There, Kogasa-san! 2025

The bike had no one on it, and it was just laying on the ground, so we couldn't see it and ended up driving into it.
Since we were conversing intently, we didn't see the moment of impact.
Good thing we didn't run anyone over.

In Taiwan, the general mentality is that "the person who got run over is guilty", so let's be careful (^^;)

I have to question the mentality of someone who would leave a bike laying in the middle of the road, presumably throughout the night.

Anyway, reader-added tags include "We can't see it, so there's nothing we can do", "Something like this is certainly wrong!", and "Dangerous survey".

This survey asks you to look both ways before crossing:

With which one have you done it with?

    • With a bicycle
    • With a motorcycle
    • With a passenger car
    • With a truck
    • With heavy machinery

I heard that in China if they hit a pedestrian, they will make sure that pedestrian is dead. Scary.

I guess that sort of thing happens when it is one in a billion.

    One less mouth to feed.

    Holy shit.

Here in the Canary Islands is quite the opposite: drivers are extremely careful about pedestrians, because the police basically rips you a new one if you so much as forget to give them priority around crossovers....

The fine for roadkill is cheaper than paying for an injured person for a lifetime. Actual prison sentences are rare.

Articles about the phenomenon are easy to find.

That applies to many countries actually. Because in law terms is cheaper to cover a funeral than a possible incapacity lifetime pension.

I once heard a joke that if you're going to run over someone, don't hit the brakes and hit the gas instead.

At least, I hope that was a joke.

Pretty much the same here in the USA, as far as I understand. The driver is considered to be at fault for a collision even if the pedestrian was disobeying traffic laws simply because of how much damage a vehicle can cause.

[edit]There are exceptions for when the pedestrian is attempting to commit suicide or insurance fraud though.
