I've tried Salmiakki, it's not that bad. I definitely understand why some people wouldn't like it, though.

I remember seeing videos of guys feeding it to their goats, because the ammonium chloride breaks up bladder stones or something like that.

Having tasted it, it's not the saltiness you notice AT ALL. It's more the acidic taste like a battery is leaking in your mouth.

Scandinavians like some really strange shit. I think a few too many improperly prepared Surströmming rotted their taste buds off...

Well, when you have long winters and cabin fever is starting to set in, you need to find ways to entertain yourself. For the Finnish, that consists of strange salty licorice and a hallucinogenic mushrooms.
