The rising popularity of Pikachu-styled merchandise around 20 years ago is the reason that Mimikyu makes itself look like Pikachu. In fact, this Pokémon is dreadfully lonely, and it thought it would be able to make friends with humans if only it looked like Pikachu.

Err no no. The hate Pikachu part is anime only. The original intention is to imitate Pikachu to gain popularity and to be loved.
Derp. Thanks for clearing that up. I never actually played the game (or at least haven't since generation 1), and only heard about Mimikyu when my brother was watching the anime.
