When dealing with storms, there is some size advantage. Bigger ships don't get swamped by storms easily when out at sea compared to smaller ships. And since big ships have large mass and it's hull is more reinforced, it can hold against the waves for a while. And harbors and ports are death traps to large ships when hurricane strike, that's why when a hurricane is approaching, the first thing port authorities will do is to get as many large ships out at sea as fast as they can, since it's actually safer for them.

O wow, that's a good info. No wonder Musashi is alright through the storm in the pic.

And it is also true for the opposite. Small ships have better chance in port.

Good info. After all I'm hearing most weather news are always telling that small ships are not safe during strong rain/wind.

However, just because they are big doesn't mean they are 100% invincible. When out at sea during a hurricane, the main threat are rogue waves and this waves are known to sink even the largest ships with ease. Usually the strategy used is not to ride the storm but rather skirt around it, and if avoiding the storm is impossible, look for the weakest part and go through it. Some shipping companies like Maersk actually have their own meteorological department that monitors storms throughout the world and if there is one near on of their ships, they will contact the ship and give the crew a guidance about how to avoid it.

Done, good thinking on checking the TROMs.

    February 1944 (Showa 19)
    Musashi
    Crash
    By the way,
    Shiratsuyu
    Michishio
    Thunder
While the destroyers were tossed about by the waves, their screws spinning uselessly in the air ...
while the Musashi itself was perfectly fine, the same could not be said for the army soldiers and some of the sailors embarked on her...
    Gah!
    Musashi continued to sail calmly.
    Splash
    Vomit
    Ugh...
    Gag
    Ughhh...
    Wait!! Please, slow dooown!
At the destroyers' request, the task force reduced speed from 18 knots down to 12, 9, 6, and finally 4 knots.
Some sources state that the escort was composed of Shiratsuyu, Michishio, and Fujinami, but based on war records it is rather unlikely that Fujinami was part of the task force. According to their TROMs, Shiratsuyu and Michishio were escorting Musashi from Yokosuka to Palau, while Fujinami was escorting Akashi to Palau.
Musashi and her escorts were caught in a large storm.
