    Well, it's as "weird" as hematite, magnetite, or limonite, all of which are iron ores. (Although all of those have an actual name in Japanese kanji, rather than just phonetically saying the Western name for the ore.)

    What I find weird is that they refer to the refined materials for everything but aluminum.

    Except that's based upon region. (And it's no more tedious than 'lorries' having engines under their 'bonnets', rather than 'trucks' having engines under their 'hoods'. I always just found the differences amusing.) There's only one way to spell it in Japanese, as far as I know. (And it's "アルミニウム"/"Aluminium".) Also, it's not like DMM really expected KanColle to catch on outside Japan, so they didn't really give a crap about what other regions would think of their terms.
