But seriously, outside of parody, why is Miko running for "President of the Human Village"? It's not exactly like Miko's rather soft-spoken personality overlaps with Trump's.

Well, she already has a lot of experience as Prince, and no doubt she might see the leaderless state of the Human Village as needing a strong central government. Besides, although the youkai definitely do not want the Village to have a leader, Miko is definitely strong enough to make it happen (until Yukari steps in.)

But then again, AFiEU is written by Aya, so everything should be taken with a grain of salt. Especially since the tengu are also manipulating the Village's working from the shadows.

Because she isn't, that is the whole joke about fake news.
Miko is only giving a speech about the dangers of candy, and is more like a professional motivator trying to get people to eat healthy.

Aya: "Don- I mean Miko is collaborating with Nitori and other Kappa hackers to rig the Touhou Series Popularity Contest! Miko is an illegitimate prophet and Taoism will destroy Gensokyo!"

Miko: "Who was the one caught telling the kappas 'I'll have more flexibility after the contest?' Bayakuren and Buddhism is very dishonest for wiretapping the Taoist Shrine! Hayate Report is of the last media sources not bought out by the Reimu special interests!

Aya: "How do you respond to the recent report by Sanae that proves Miko is involved with the Kappas?"
Futo: "Sanae's report on the last line of the first paragraph says 'there is no evidence to conclude that Miko or Taoism has in any way conspired with the Kappas'. On the other hand, I think there is a lot more evidence about your fake news colluding with the Marisa campaign to give her debate questions ahead of time."

When I saw "Alternative Facts" in the title of the new book, I knew this was going to happen. 2016 was so big, it even affected Gensokyo...

IS it "bigly"? Or is it "big league"? I'm never quite sure when I hear it.

The joke is that she wasn't, and Aya ripped the story whole cloth from IRL Donald Trump news with a few words changed. The Human Village has no central government body because it is not large enough to need one, so Miko can't possibly run for election.

But speaking of which, HOLY SHIT she sweats a fuckload. This photo is undoctored, and if all Miko was talking about was eating healthy, then she must really take the subject seriously.

I really don't think this type of stuff is a good idea atm even if it's just for jokes.American politics is an extremely dangerous place right now and anything can set anyone off including this.
Both sides are bursting with hatred and disgust for each other. Look, all I'm saying is ZUN shouldn't be surprised if this gets massive backslash from fans since this is just begging for in these times.

American politics is severely on edge, and a lot of Europe as well, but Japan is relatively insulated from that (barring it involving North Korea, but that's a couple degrees of separation away...) There aren't that many Japanese diehard Trump supporters, and why would he be afraid of offending Americans with his small-run doujins almost exclusively circulated within Japan?

I think initially he said "big league", but Trump has used "yuge" (with deliberate misspelling of "y" rather than "h") so it isn't like he is opposed to making his own words. However, when he does do that, he usually emphasizes the difference and usually only does it at rallies. There were some people making fun of him for that (despite bigly being an actual, but obscure word) but Trump seems to embody the American spirit, take your oppositions insults and turn them into rallying terms. Several times in his later rallies I am certain he deliberately used "bigly" almost to reference the media's response as the context didn't make as much sense for "big league" to be used.

I think if people are going to let this make them hate Touhou, they never truly liked or knew what Touhou is. Aside from the fact that a great majority of Touhou isn't cannon, the current situation of politics is really not anything new. We had riots before, we had assassinations, and terrorism even in the 20th century. The only difference is that there is more mediums in which to voice one's opinion which I think is a more healthy outlet than what rioters are doing. Discussion educates people, even if they may not admit it initially, and the more people talk, the more accurate one's perspective becomes as to defend a position, you have to know the opposing side. I think the answer to political tension is not PC, censorship, or safe spaces (not that you were suggesting that) but just getting as much information and perspectives to the public as possible on the subject. People shouldn't hold back if their intents are honest, because bad guys certainly do not stop to think about some one else's opinion when they put propaganda. More light hearted tones give politics a calmer outlet IMO.

As an example, universities have been growing hotspots for terrorism and rioters since a political bubble is established where only one side is held and any dissenting opinions are subject to grade changes by professors, violence by classmates, or even "re-education" camps. The overt idea in universities is "no politics" but by default, the universities bias creeps in since no one is truly free from politics or unbiased (we may not have time for politics, but it has time for us. And the only person who is truly neutral holds no opinion or thoughts). In contrast, community colleges are more career oriented so people are more open in speaking their mind. While heated discussions do occur, by being able to compete on equal ground the tension stays low and people have more opportunities to speak their minds as well as hear the opposition. Ultimately the attitudes in the community colleges is much more friendly.

I'm certain you are right that Zun will get hate mail, but he can't please everyone and I am sure for every hater there will be a Toho loyalist who will defend him.

The US is the one that should be learning from Gensokyo (and not vice-versa). Discussion is breaking down, and confrontation is only a matter of time... preferably with the Spellcard System. Just remember, when Paul Ryan uses "Atlas Shrugged", the Earth might look scary coming at you, but it has a deceptively small hitbox.

The photo in the article about Toyosatomimi no Miko was not manipulated, but compared to the photo the original article text was unexciting, and in order to make it a bit more dramatic and "weekly magazine-like", we ripped off a weekly magazine article about the presidential election in the outside world. As a result, the contents became almost completely invented. In our desire to make the article exciting, we gave in to temptation. The original text was as follows: As part of an awareness campaign directed towards humans, Toyosatomimi no Miko has been giving regular lectures. The topic of this lecture was "Healthy living for humans explained by a hermit". When the article talks about "President" it really means "Health President", and her quotes about "youkai" really referred to "very sweet candy". "Illegal youkai immigrants are stealing our jobs in the Human Village" was "candy is taking over our food". a pun on 職/食 All her other quotes were also talking about how eating too much candy is bad for your health. It was something like, you should store candy in a high place where children can't reach it, but really it was just too boring. In editing the text to make it more exciting and dramatic, we regret to say that changes to the meaning were introduced.
