There's no point in making fun of the obviously farcical points, but why can't they just hand over their egg and take advantage of the automatic clothes swapping and hair styling that occurs at that point?

No, there have been multiple cases of characters freely handing their egg over (including Roland and those two that lost their eggs from swapping too frequently). At the very least, even if it "requires a duel", they can obviously just forfeit because, again, there have been egg transfers without any fights.

In any event, if their objective is to hand over their egg, dressing up is absolutely unnecessary and clearly unnerving, and obviously done just to show these guys are failures permanently stuck holding the idiot ball.

Dressing up is an attempt to seduce the King. They can't turn into women until after they give up the egg, after all.

Also if I understand the rules correctly you only get the clothes and hair the first time. These dudes may have been around the block a few times.
