My guess is because in fictional comical situations no one questions it with reality to avoid ruining the mood for something that wasn't meant to be serious in the first place.

That's why. And that's exactly why Christopher Columbus was considered especially despicable, since despite being brought to speed to the modern world and how slavery was pretty much an anathema in modern societies (but somehow unpaid internship is okay???), he still wants to enslave, pillage, rape, and burn.
