    "MVP" part 6

    Look, fireworks!
It actually says "Taaamayaaa," which is a traditional Japanese call made when seeing fireworks, after one of the major classic fireworks manufacturers.

I've read quite a few Clancy novels but I never really cared much for them. I don't know why they are so popular, but someone told me that he basically was the first to make modern military fiction a genre which is why his works are such a big deal. I'm more of a non-fiction reader though, so my impatience for novels may be the only reason. I don't even like reading light novels (although I do like Marginal Operation).

The way they dealt with the bad guys in the book was better.

I'm pretty sure it's a mix of "Murikan Xcepshunalizm" and the fact that every novel Clancy wrote is a US wank when the actual fighting rolls around.

It's like the guy was never exposed to the reality of the Bradley, among other things.

I don't know, I think Clancy was pretty fair in his books. Even though the American Jack Ryan is the MC in many of the books (which I think is somewhat of an artist self insert), I would go so far as to say the majority of most of the books is a foreign perspective. For example, Red October switched back and forth from the US and Soviet perspective and how they react to each other. In Night Moves the big heroes were actually a south and a north korean who together negotiated peace which prevented a war that would have started by a false flag.

I agree though that some lack of realism is partially why I don't care for some of Clancy's writings. One is his concept of women in combat which I like in fiction, (and apparently he did too because man, some of those chapters with sex scenes seemed like a bad fanfic.) I don't think it is pragmatic in reality except in extreme emergencies. He also often has characters lamenting about killing in combat which in reality, I think most guys don't think as much about not killing as how to do it well since we all know that killing is part of the job description (but usually not a big portion of the job itself) and if we hesitate in that 1%, other people could be hurt. Tom Clancy also has an FDR mindset partially due to the time period he was born where his books often idealize grand globalist unions that work a lot more effectively in the books than in real life.

It's more like political bias only really bothers people when it's not the political bias they share. Clancy was a right-wing military hawk, and wrote from that perspective.

I think David Himes's infamous 'Oh John Ringo No!' book review covers the concept well (in fact, he even name-drops Clancy). Media is inherently a reflection of the creator's inner id, and therefore, political bias is unavoidable. (Although some creators are more subtle, and some just can't help themselves from giving a political bukake all over everything they touch.)

In any event, I suppose the answer to my question is, "Yes, lots of people have seen Hunt for Red October."
