Just to clarify, yes there were some odd-looking features on the map that look like they were created by some nuclear blasts. But the comic never actually mentioned how exactly they were created, or even whether they're in fact craters or just naturally formed. All the page says is that there were ruins and some parts of the map were blacked out. Combined with the fact that the bombing operation usually happened inland, the black areas are more likely where they actually bombed.

They aren't from nuclear weapons, they are from large scale thermobaric bombardment. Like carpet bombing with an entire airgroup (the correct UK definition of an airgroup that is) of B-52s large scale.
