My opinion. Ash got better looking more and more...until Sun & Moon.
Did the usual artist quit or was just tired? Or did the creators wanted a more comedic and younger looking approach? If it's the comedic approach, they succeeded.
I just miss the better looking Ash from X & Y. I will admit that the X & Y made him looking mature looking and yet they still wanted Ash to be...what is it again...10? The Sun and Moon look does make him look like 10.

I'll say its the comedic approach, its a lot more slapstick than previous seasons. And it sure work, I actually manage to stick around a lot longer than I thought I will. I do agree XY Ash is coolest.
