Added to the Hilarious in Hindsight pool because this picture was uploaded here before episode 14 of the anime series aired, and both the picture and the commentary fit in nicely with what happened in episode 14.

I think it's more Harsher in Hindsight though, given how episode 14 went...

Noted and changed. Still, this picture did predict how Zero Two's horns would grow out and how there was a short sequence when her pupils glowed red, and how these two didn't want to talk to each other when it most mattered in episode 14.

Hiro even outright called her a monster, and neither got to comfort the other like in this picture.

Is it just me, or is that shadow more reminiscent of Al from FMA when he was in doodle-mode than it is anything else?

Poor communication kills. If only they talked about it when the time was right, everything else following wouldn't have happened.

Yet another heartbreaking episode after the one where Kokoro chose Mitsuru over Futoshi. Squad 13 can't catch a break.

@OMGkillitwithfire Sure thing. "If only" is one of the hardest things for humanity to deal with. Events might have turned out better if Hiro and Zero Two had the time and opportunity to sort things out between themselves. But as we saw in Episode 14, Zero Two still had a ways to go. She didn't realize that hurting Hiro's friends (and hurt them she did) would hurt Hiro himself.

It's not exactly a new thing for Japanese writers and directors to make famously tragic stories. They have many of these guys like Tomino "Kill 'Em All" Yoshiyuki, or Anno "So Fucked Up" Hideaki, or Maeda "Bittersweet Endings For All" Jun, or even Urobuchi "Urobutcher" Gen.

Even with all that, this picture is simple but quite effective in making the viewer wish the two could understand each other better. Sad, but beautiful still.

Not sure why anyone considered "if only they talked" to even be an option when it should have been clear from ep2 that Zero Two and Ichigo both doesn't like to listen to anyone else and will not take no for an answer.

And Hiro is just too much of a bland beta to try and solve any issue even when his own damn life is on the line and should have known better.

02 is presented as the "bullied girl" there, after episodes to establish her "tragic past" and show her as weak inside.
Bad timing for Ichigo, and taking time alone with Hiro makes her looks like she doesn't "play fair", so the one-sided sympathetic reaction looks normal.

@azurelorochi Hiro wasn't always so bland. If you watched episode 13, you'll find out his memories were altered, and with them his more assertive and independently-thinking personality traits.

During that eps, younger Hiro actually reminds me of Shuu or Saki from Shin Sekai yori.

And that matters how? I'm talking the current Hiro is too busy being the generic LN protag he never made a single decision that doesn't actively make the life of himself and everyone around him worse.

The fact that the biggest problem he has now are two girls who fell in love with his past self and not current one should make that worse, if anything.

Because he's getting those memories, and possibly personality, back.

Darling in the Franxx isn't actually based on an LN. It's an original series, coming before the manga adaptation. And I believe that his "blandness" in the first half is partly to reel the audience into sympathizing with him.

The fact that the biggest problem he has now are two girls who fell in love with his past self and not current one should make that worse, if anything.

He showed signs of changing in Episode 14. His escape from his hospital room was much like his older self before his memories were tampered with, albeit an ill-timed return.

Never said it was. "LN protag" explains the trait typical to LN protagonists, as in characters made to be intentionally bland and generic enough to not conflict with either the multiple love interests' personalities nor the audiences' wide-stroke beliefs for the sake of allowing them to fantasize themselves as him. It refers to the writing when character being "relatable" is given far more importance than them being a distinct and compelling individual, like the faceless protag of a VN.

This applies even if the character himself does not come from an LN, much like hot headed, dumb and impulsive with a strong sense of justice protagonists are "shounen protag" regardless of whether they actually come from a shounen manga.

I really hate this PC culture where you have to explain your word choice in every goddamn conversation.

Except no, even without his memories Hiro was less obedient about rules to begin with. And his breaking of rules, especially in that scene can be seen more as him thinking with his dick more than his head, a trait I would attribute to Zero Two's influence on him moreso than his old personality returning.

At any rate, my point still stands that Hiro never made a single good decision in this entire show. He's constantly led on by Zero Two pulling on his dick, and that hardly worked out either.
