That is kind of a quirky looking rifle magazine. It's "L" shaped? I wonder how it works.

That is an APS rifle, a Soviet-built underwater assault rifle. The odd magazine shape is a result of it's ammunition, a 120 mm long steel dart launched from a 5.66x39mm cartridge, selected for its superior underwater ballistics compared to normal bullets.

Aha! I guess that explains the huge looking receiver too. I thought that was also kind of strange, but I'm never quite sure sometimes with some artists; not that anyone is going for accuracy anyways.

Also, that sounds kind of like an odd thing in itself. Were the Soviets expecting some kind of threat where they would need soldiers to fight other soldiers in deep water? I guess it's a good choice if you are a hungry shark girl though.

Well...given how cold the waters around their area, chances are those are created for covert missions of breaking into a sub/aircraft carrier or such. Pushing/dragging people into the sea using high waves as cover and then finishing them with one of these is probably how it was meant to be used, not to fight sharkgirls or a sharknado.

Well frogmen, or combat divers, are employed by many nations for the purpose of assaulting or sabotaging ships and other installations accessible by water. During WWII, for example, Italian frogmen conducted a raid on Alexandria that left two battleships out of commission for several months, for the low low price of six Italians taken prisoner. Obviously, the Soviets considered enemy frogmen such a threat that they wanted a weapon that their frogmen could use to take out enemy frogmen from a distance.
