Pretty sure the original Unsinkable Sam retired as on ever ship it served on sank and sailors began to think it was cursed. These included ships like Bismarck and Royal, along with one other; the HMS Cossack if memory serves me right.

you are correct, Unsinkable same lived the rest of his life in Gibraltar

According to Wikipedia, he only spent a short time living in the offices of the Governor of Gibraltar after which, he was sent to the UK and lived in a seaman's home in Belfast till he died in 1955.
