Well if we look at the themes of Idoru, you could look at Hatsune Miku going from being a personification for a music program to an idol in of herself, along with Kizuna AI now having voice roles in various things, as breaching the gap.
They may not be sentient, but I as far as I vaguely remember it, Idoru talked about our created idols taking on a level of realness that neither the viewer or the actor is fully aware of where the boundary is.
