アマゾネス comes directly from the Greek plural form Ἀμαζόνες "Amazones" and is not meant to be an English word ending in "-ess", which would be redundant as Mazryonh notes. Still, the translation of "Amazoness" is used sometimes, like in Sailor Moon SuperS or in the fan translation of Seiken Densetsu 3, though it's technically incorrect.
The dialogue references an old myth: "Among Classical Greeks, amazon was given a naive etymology as from a- (privative) + mazos, "without breast", connected with an etiological tradition that Amazons had their right breast cut off or burnt out, so they would be able to use a bow more freely and throw spears without the physical limitation and obstruction."
