It's strange how one small missing detail in a drawing can ruin it.
It's human instinct to immediately focus upon the face, so a "small mistake" on the face seems much more important and is latched upon subconsciously than other places, like where only a small fraction of people notice too many fingers on a hand.
In this case, I think it's mostly a problem of how pastel the body was drawn to try to give it a soft-focus impression. Maybe it was even leveled after the drawing was mostly complete, making the whole image have that effect, without the artist noticing how pale the eyes were becoming, and therefore how little texture they seemed to have.
