So, basically, this is the equivalent of spamming a deity's inbox, huh. Wasn't really aware of this cultural practice before I looked it up.

The haiden usually takes the form of a 'mini-shrine'/raised porch at the front of a Shinto shrine with the donation box where you see supplicants in anime/manga/games pray, clap their hands and pull the rope. The goshintai (the actual venerated object where the kami is enshrined) is not found here, but within the honden (lit. "main hall", but uses a different term compared to the Buddhist equivalent). Most ceremonies are performed at the haiden, and the honden is closed to the general public, so most people don't get to enter the honden unless they need to (and are privileged enough to) perform some sort of complicated or esoteric ritual.

The hondou is sort of the Buddhist equivalent, but the temple's important objects of veneration can also be found here, and this place is open to the general public for prayer (so it fulfills the roles of both haiden and honden). If you've been to a Buddhist temple before (of whichever sect in whichever country), this will be similar to (and is pretty much the same as) the main worship hall found there, filled with statues, incense censers and other artifacts.

So, the main distinction is that Shinto supplicants worship at an adjunct building while the main object(s) of worship are kept separately (and safely) within the main building, while Buddhist supplicants worship at the main building itself. Most Japanese people practice both religions (syncretically) so they go to both. And sometimes you can find shrines within temples (and vice versa, but that's less common because of Meiji-era persecution) and the Shinto deity Inari is also worshipped by some Buddhist temples.

Your communism is showing through, 'Biki.

It's a method of prayer where you enter from the front gate of a shrine or temple and make your way towards the haiden or hondou to pay your respects, before returning to the entrance and repeating the same for a hundred times in hopes of getting your wish fulfilled. Well, it's not like you will actually get your wish if you do it though. Haiden (lit. "worship hall") refers to the front part of a Shintō shrine (that same place Reimu keeps her donation box) while Hondou (lit. "main hall") refers to the main building in Buddhist temples. Worshippers usually offer their prayers in these places when they go to a shrine or temple.
