I need some help coming up with a word for "cutting corners"/"skimping on essentials"/"halfassing" that works with the visual pun here (手抜き means "cutting corners", but the individual kanji literally means "pull out hand").

The only "halfassing"-related phrase I can think of off the top of my head would be some variation of "not even raising a hand to help". You might be able to get away with something like "taking back your helping hand"?

Oh! She's pulling her hand out of the bundle of torps! (How did she get her hand into it???) I thougt, she was punching it, like shaolin monks punch into sand in some movies, and was expecting a true kancolle comic.

This is cutting corners, when only one speech bubble is translated and the other is left as is.

Can't really get that to work in the deliberately obtuse and complex sentence (filled with enough circumlocution, torturing of grammar and doublespeak to make Sir Humphrey proud). Thanks for helping though.

She's using the karate nukite (spear hand) move to pierce through the gaps in the bundle before withdrawing her hand. I suppose it's a really, really, high-stakes method of training where one mistake can lead to A REAL KANCOLLE MANGA™.

I'd like to say it was on purpose... but it wasn't, sadly.

It refers to the act of deliberately omitting crucial steps in one's work and the like. That said, even half-assed illustrations may, if uploaded on Twitter, be or not be popular, by relying on the power of, viz., having enough mutual followers of related or superficially-similar interests, having people who are in awe of other people with lots of followers, and having people who think that just because some tweet is being retweeted profligately means it's absolutely awesome or something.
