This will almost certainly end badly. But yeah sure.

Never played mario 64? If you release the chain chomp, it jumps happily, smash a cell holding a star and go away.

To be fair, that was one chain chomp that was friendly after helping it. (Before stomping the post, it'd still chomp your ass, even while actively trying to free it.) There were a few chainless chomps, as well, in games like Mario Kart DS and I vaguely remember Mario Bros. 3 having some flying chainless chomps during some of the constant motion stages, and they were definitely not friendly.

    Hence, extreme caution is warranted.

Between the sound they make and the fact that domesticated pet chain chomps exist, this is no more a gamble than freeing any unfamiliar tied-up dog.

A dog whose breed was crafted for biting, but fundamentally doggy nonetheless.

"Domesticated" by creatures even larger and tougher than them, usually. You've never seen a Toad taking one for a walk, after all.

Unless those are crocodile tears, how do we know this won't end up being an Androcles' Lion situation?

Ok, having now played color splash, I must correct myself. A toad has had one as a pet. However, it also became a menace as soon as it became bigger than said toad, so I think the point still stands.

Come to think of it, this is the Androcles' Lion trope at play, isn't it?
