Simple: It's mainly targeted at girls (outside of the Iris titles), who aren't as interested in seeing other girls naked. I mean, look at the main characters in the Arland series, and how their character design is basically all frills and meant to be primarily cute, not cheesecake.

Touhou design is also usually frilly cute stuff.

It's still the target audience. Touhou's target audience is your usual Otaku. Atelier has always even from the 1st game has always had a female target audience.

Atelier is NOT waifu focused at all. Complete opposite in fact.

In fact, nearly all the Atelier games have a Reverse harem in them. With the main love interest being your typical White Knight in shining armor. Not the normal thing Otaku dudes want to see in their games.

There's almost no fanservice in the game at all. If anything, we get to see the dudes shirtless more than girl panties. And the overall message in all the Atelier games has always been to "Try your best even if you're a dojiko".

The Atelier games also forgo the usual Shounen Tropes of saving the world. Atelier Marie, the first game is legit just about Marie passing Alchemy school. Getting a game over doesnt end the world, she just fails her class and has to get held back. All the Atelier game's game overs pretty much result in the girls just having to deal with their own mistakes rather than fighting some arch demon or something.

This comment actually make me want to play Atelier than the artwork itself

I got the Mysterious Trilogy artbook.
There are a few pantyshots of Sophie in there, but that's all.
    I found it unexpected.

Most of this is wrong though...maybe you’re s long time can but I’ve only been playing since Arland

It’s plenty waifu focused. Most of the Berlin de I’ve seen have fabservice outfits including the first one Marie being kind of egregious. It has a mostly female cast, all of them either being very cute with at least one explicitly sexy/sultry member. You always get swimsuit outifits there always a hotsprings scene. It’s as much of a “cute girls doing cute things” series as k-on.

No there isn’t always a love interest. The only one I’ve played that has one is escha and logy. And logy was explicitly put in the game to appeal more to boys(I think?)

The series isn’t usually save the world type plot necessarily but that saving the world slaying dragons still happens. The plot isn’t about the archdemon but there IS still an arch demon that they slay. The combat has all these wooshy chuuni shounen tropes and all that

And yeah...have you seen the art books of this game? The fanservice gets played up quite a bit.

Unless the company said they were aiming for girls, I think this is all in your head, man. It might be more aimed at girls than other games but it has just as much stuff, to appeal to guys being a waifu simulator and all

I would say maybe it took a turn away but I’ve read about other games and it has this stuff too.

And then there’s the mana khemia series

Different games are aimed at different audiences. Mana Khemia was more gender neutral (In 2, the male protag's plot is very shounen, but the female protag's plot is very shoujo), while the Atelier Iris games were pretty explicitly for male audiences. Ar Tonelico was so obviously for boys that it had a full-on dating VN section thrown in. That said, while Gust's more recent games try to appeal to both, the "Atelier" games (outside the Iris series) are more female audience focused than most. Atelier Annie basically features a desexualized heroine who can date a selection of hot guys. Yeah, it's not something you have to do, but it's definitely part of the game that Rorona can wind up with Sterk or any of the other male party members, and the sequels even tease at their relationship.

But still, just because there's some fanservice doesn't mean it's not built either partly to, or even mainly to appeal to girls. Mahou Shoujo in general is meant for girls, but the people that make such things know there's a male audience, and will find ways to slip in light fanservice that won't alienate the core audience. K-On as well was generally gender-neutral.

Yeah. Do wishing they do the Mana Khemia series instead, at least it favors both sides.

The thing is, I don’t know if we can make absolute statements about what is “aimed at” people. For every girl that relates to the girls and thinks they’re cute there’s just as many dudes who like cute girls as well,

and there’s a distinction between “hardly any fanservice” having a hot springs scene in nearly every game and the girls groping eachother, and you get a swimsuit, and there’s going to be at least one character with gigantic tits and hevwing cleavage, and some of the girls even have jiggle physics.

Plus like I said the combat is becoming more and more chuuni shounen action as the games progresses.

I’m just saying there’s enough for both stereotypical genders so it just seems too drastic to make these definitive statements on who the game is “meant for”

But, then again like I said I’ve only been playing since Armand trilogy. Maybe they’ve moved away from it in recent years and it used to be all girl all the time.
