Well it's technically a 3rd party edit, and Danbooru prefers fidelity to the source if possible (even if the 3rd party edit is superior in some way such as via removal of image artifacts).

It's more okay for '2nd party' scans though (when used to denoise); because by its very nature some degree of post-processing is necessary when scanning, whether it be leveling or denoising or automatic/manual removal of image artifacts.

(Of course, Danbooru doesn't exactly encourage mass uploading of scanned doujinshi anyway.)

As for viruses, embedding viruses in images usually doesn't work, since the code is not executed. The attacker needs to rely on some sort of exploit to get whichever program that views the image to execute the hidden code. These usually get patched out very quickly (so keep your critical programs up to date).

(Notably, there was a proof of concept attack against web browsers called Stegosploit where the attacker bundles malicious javascript together with the image, but the web admin has to be in the scheme for it to work. Not possible on Danbooru where the files get renamed automatically.)

That last part sorta sounds like what happened on 4chan years ago, with the 4chan.js javascript attack.

Yes, I understand how embedding viruses into photos work, as I repair PCs and build them as a side job. I didn't know what WaifuX2 is because I'm not much of a fan of anime. (Before you say something like "Then why are you on this site?" It's because I admin a Discord server and was appointed to gathering NSFW images. :/) I also don't know how Danbooru works or what the admins are like. I do know that admins can go rogue as has happened to certain sites and some Discord servers. So who knows what happens...
