Laharl's mother dies when he is very young, yes. Keep in mind, Laharl is half-demon. His mother was human. By a human time, he may have been much older than a baby, but by demon time, he was still probably a newborn.

In the beginning of the game I actually thought that Demons lived forever; in Disgaea 3, there were insanely old men that were still going to high school.
