i dunno if Renji is ready to handle a squad like that. he's about as strong as Kira, Ikkaku, and Hisagi. and they're all handling their positions pretty well at the moment.

Well I think Hisagi might be qualified soon since he's basically leading his squad. Renji still hasn't had much leadership experience, and Ikkaku? He isn't well rounded to be in a position of rank in any other squad.
i've heard arguments on Ikkaku's behalf that since he could use bankai, he's automatically qualified to lead. but no one has ever put up the counter argument you have about it. and the funny thing is, it's completely true. he really isn't well rounded for that sort of position.
Besides that. Can Ichigo be captain of any division in the Gotei 13 while being alive? I mean, he is still alive in this storyline compared to every shinigami in the story who've already dead decades ago then became part of rukongai then a shinigami.
First it was for squad 11 (Something he's well suited for), and second it's been said he had a few followers before then (all of which are in squad 11. And he as a sort of leader aura... that or he scares the crap outta anyone who would disobey him. But the Squad has grown to reflect Kenpachi's mindset.
As for Ichigo? While he's strong enough to be a captain... I don't think he quite has the right stuff to be a captain leader wise.
i agree with stridertuna, Kenpachi although he shows spartan vigor when it comes to fights, he still shows a good level of control when it comes to orders. despite how he acts, he obeys commands from old man Yama, and he directs his squad ethically too. the only thing we see that's out of hand is their attitude. but squad 11 follows Kenpachi's orders to a T.
Ichigo didn't die, since he still has a living body. which should indicate he isn't dead. if he was then he wouldn't be moving around in the real world like has now would he. but on the question of him being a captain, again i have to agree with stridertuna on this, he's not level headed enough to make decisions for a whole squad when he has a tough time handling a group of 5.
Look at it this way; the fact that the Gotei 13 have that succession rule in the first place says that leadership qualities are not regarded as being as important as sheer combat prowess.

i think it's more of a balance thing. they have to have sheer prowess of course, but at the same time they need to be capable enough to keep their squads alive, relay orders, ect.

And what part of being able to beat the last captain in battle says anything about that second set of qualities?
Squad 11 seems like it was custom-made for this rule since everyone in that unit respects personal strength and follows Kenpachi out of personal admiration, but what if Kenpachi had taken over, say, Squad Nine? How would the recruits and the lower seats react to having someone like Kenpachi leading them just because he killed the captain?
how does it not? he is capable enough to keep his squad alive. just cause he followed the custom (an outdated one at the time too mind you) doesn't mean he was less capable of being a good leader for his squad. you're putting it all down to that one moment and not looking at his whole career as a captain in general.
Well Not sure how most other squads reagard the 11th squad... (We all know the 4th one is often harried by them... short of when Unohana's there... who scares them)
Though I think a decent number of squad 11 were the sort to believe in strength, thus Kenpachi is the perfect leader.
But the point is despite having Bankais, Ichigo, Ikkaku, and Renji have a ways to go in other aspects before they can handle the role of captain. It just so happens that Kenpachi's life instilled him with a leadership sense.

But his career as a captain only comes *after* he's been selected for the job based solely on his combat capabilities.
The ability to fight in and of itself says nothing about the warrior's ability to keep his subordinates alive or relay orders or whatever else you think is important in a leader; all it says is that he's good at killing things and not getting killed in return. Using this succession system it would be possible to have a captain who is as powerful as all fuck but couldn't lead his way out of a paper bag.
Now fortunately for Squad 11 Kenny has enough natural leadership qualities to be a capable captain in his own right, on top of whatever respect his troops have for him. All I'm saying is that the succession system has a few major flaws in it that could allow a complete douchebag to become a captain.
well no one can really argue that fact. i mean we do have 3 traitor captains on the loose. though it has it's slight flaws it's still works pretty well. regardless of how Kenpachi was selected as captain, those qualities are still needed. if it wasn't all the shinigami that could use bankai like stridertuna stated would be running around as a captain. it's not so specifically based on power. the power is necessary but on the other hand the leadership qualities must follow.
My guess is At the climax of Bleach, Ichigo died. For his bravery, "God" gave him a chance: To become a captain of Gotei 13. (Not so) Happy End. Or Ichigo won the battle. Vizzards spared & back to seireitei again. Ichigo live happily ever after with (enter your choice between Rukia, Orihime, or Nel). When he die at his 80th birthday, "God" gave him a chance: To become a captain of Gotei 13. Happy End
