That may not be confidence as much as the agitation that comes from the person in charge of navigation having no idea where the hell they are and are either panicking or desperate not to admit they need directions. My grandfather would get like this where he would sooner swallow cyanide then stop and re-orient. (only some of the time though)

I think she's more hiding panic look at her facial expression. She's on the verge of freaking out. If she was along we would have her sobbing more likely than not
