With that much metal, moving parts, and electronics, there's no way they let you have a free trial without collateral in case the user just steals it/ jailbreaks the chasis/ sells it for scrap after the trial is over. Considering the investment, I would assume you realistically would just pay upfront.

By our standards, yes. Who is to say such a machine couldn't become as common as computers have to us in another world? Perhaps these robot models are now second class to newer synthetics or replicants, and thus are mostly discount subscriptions and used models.
That could explain the pity tactics too. It wouldn't be as devastating if the girl just quit or broke up with you once you didn't pay (like a prostitute). Having the "poor, ailing cast-off" begging not to get replaced would hit people right in the sympathy.
Still, I get your point. Rentals usually take your information and address, but I'd be surprised if shrink doesn't happen when the thing literally takes itself apart if you ignore it.
