Now that I think about it, ever since the anime and OAV, School Days has become a parody of itself. With the constant hand-waving and lampshade-hanging of the bloody game endings (and of the meme it spawned, too), now it's hard to take the entire thing seriously (especially the upcoming Cross Days sequel) when everybody already expects a bloodbath to happen.

you do make a pretty good point. The bad endings hardly have the shock value they once had, and I myself don't think Makoto would be near as deserving of all the hate he gets had more people played the original game (not to mention how worthy of noting it is that a threesome ending IS possible). But on the other hand, I am greatly amused at how much Overflow apparently resonated with its fanbase, more so than most other companies (rarely will you see a meme actually leak back to an official source). Also, while Overflow's games are still a step above most other eroge in that they actually feature animation, it's hard to tell whether they would've been successful for that alone given the fact that the animation's extremely choppy, the audio is poorly acted and/or directed (just look at Makoto's reaction when Kotonoha slits Sekai on the overpass), their later releases were either horribly delayed or glitch-ridden, not to mention the general niche audience that's into eroge to begin with. At any rate, I love me some Kotonohasama. ^^
