No, but it's a token standard theme for elementary schools in Japan to include playing the recorder as part of the music curriculum (which is mandatory). You see it all the time in anime and manga, though I don't know if they do this IRL.

IRL, the recorder is the most common instrument to start with in many countries. Didn't know it was even mandatory in Japan, though.
BTW, there was a Galaxy Angel episode where they opened up shop with one of the products being "the taste from your loved one's recorder" or something. Hilarious! ^_^
It was mandatory in the elementary that I went to here in Canada as well... unfortunately it was taken down as a part of a project to have two elementary schools instead of ~5-6.
