Because if the metal burns your gloves you wouldn't notice until it's too late?

This sounds like one of those uncommon sense type things that will only make sense once you point it out.

You know, if she's going to talk to her metals like that while they're so young and impressionable, she's going to have to spend so much time working out the kinks later.

Basically. There's a limit to how well gloves can insulate you, and metal that's not quite hot enough to glow can still give you severe burns even through a glove. But that insulation keeps you from noticing how hot it actually is. You also run into other risks like getting a hot piece of scale or slag trapped in your glove, or losing your grip on your hammer or workpiece.

It's always better to follow safe work practices than work carelessly and rely on your gear to protect you.
