The chaplain's art style seems rather Bloom Country to me.
I have no objections. Bloom County is easily one of my favorite newspaper comic series, and a wonderful satire of the 80s' particular brand of madness.
Not familiar with the comic being referenced, but it seems to be a reference/parody to the comic Chick Tracts.

Because the guy you want as a chaplain to a bunch of Catholics is a guy who passes out tracts famous for their Anti-Catholic bent.
There's one that compares their reverence of the Virgin Mary to the Roman Goddess Venus and all sorts of other fun ones.

The Chick Tract. Infamous for their demonization of anything not Protestant. Catholicism, DnD, Islam, Pokémon, you name it, Chick probably thought it came from the Devil.
