Some strands actually detach from the creature?

Yeah, brushing often gets lots of stray hairs. For a Maine Coon like Uu-chan, it's a huge amount that you can brush off DAILY that will start to mat and clump if you aren't brushing every day. I had to cut out clumps if I couldn't brush it often enough, because they turn to felt. And brushing with a comb is like three strokes, then pulling out the layer of fur that was gathered in it.

Ball it up, and you can make a ball the size of your thumbnail every day, and make a huge ball if you just grow the same ball day after day.

Nanika isn't a creature of this world, though. Its mass (I'd very much assume) and volume are also variable. We have seen there's nothing beneath the fur like substance, which also means the fur isn't particularly attached to anything. Yet Nanika can lift physical objects. It's most likely capable of affecting the four fundamental interactions to a degree. When it's lifted or touched, it's able to offer enough physical resistance to make it seem a bit more solid, like a real cat. Unless it doesn't want that, like when trying to place the collar on it.

Anyway, Nanika's hair isn't necessarily anything like the hair we know. It's some sort of dimensional being, so the hair could also have been a projection that disintegrates as soon as it leaves the body (in this dimension). Now we know it doesn't, and it's more like any hair found from animals. That's what I was talking about in my comment.

When his new fur grows in, you have to brush him often!
    ...That's what she said, right?
That after she's done brushing Uu-chan...
    By the way, Airi-chan said
It's getting warm, so I have to brush it.
