Maybe. You won't recieve the longshot until you've beaten him. I can't remember for sure if there were any obstacles that required you having it to get to the mirror shield.

I think the boos fight and Dark Link are the only things that get me through another run of the water temple. Jesus, I hated that temple. Then there's the Master uest version. Bah, humbug...

God I remember spazzing out when I turned around and saw him. If I remember correctly too, you have a reflection in the water until you cross that island with a tree, once you do that, it's gone, and he's coming.

Yes, there were. You needed the improved longshot in order to pass the beginning of the dessert.
To the guys hung up on the Mirror Shield, you could cheat a little by getting the improved hookshot first, leave before beating the boss, and then go get the Mirror Shield.
Mand, this fight was my favourite. Even with Megaton Hammer and Biggoron Sword in my inventory, I just can't help myself but duel Dark Link fair and square XD

I don't think that's possible, since you have to beat Dark Link to get the Longshot. You could fight Morpha wearing the Mirror Shield using that strategy, though.
