    ほんとにめちゃくちゃ流行りました。
    さすがにぼくは「電話に出ない」ということはしませんでした。
    PSOで懲りたので原稿もちゃんとやりましたし!
    が、やっぱり原稿はやばくなりました(笑)

    Hang in There, Kogasa-san 3548

    It really was crazy-popular.

Naturally, I never went the "I can't use the phone" route. I got disciplined over PSO, so I made sure to get my art done! Still, my art did end up in some tight situations after all. :-)

I remember the RO beta when we got it in NA. That thing took several months of my life.

Wonder what job and what gender does Kogasa play as.

Man, that brings me back. RO was the first MMORPG I played, and by far the one I spent more time at.

I never played RO, sadly, but I saw RO2 on steam... with mixed reviews. Is it worth getting into?

I'm pretty sure RO2 is dead, last update is from MArch, before that, October. I would avoid imo.

Original RO isn't without its charm, but it's hard to get into a grindy Korean MMO that predates WoW without the nostalgia.

But they're both also free on Steam, so maybe poke your head in if you think it looks interesting.

RO was big in the Philippines. I remember Fridays after high school, and pretty much everyone was on a rush to get to the nearby mall and go to one of the numerous internet cafes to play. It was a race to go to the good ones before all that's left are the ones with iffy internet - and even then it can get packed. It was either RO, Diablo 2, or Counterstrike.

RO never had any appeal for me.

The grindy, Korean MMORPG that got me hooked during my younger days was MapleStory.

The first one had sprite art that was heavily styled on anime. The second one was polygon-based and rather generic looking. If they had updated the old art in a new engine, or just done a better job of translating the style to a 3d medium, I think the sequel would have been a lot more popular.

Oh thanks! I didn't realize the original was still running, much less free on steam. I think I'll take a look.

The only bad thing about Ragnarok online now is how split off the population of players is. Granted we all can agree we still love the game, but between the grindy official servers and the more linient fanmade servers which there are a lot of, its definitely a bunch of communitys within a community.

If you dont like how grindy the official servers are, Ratemyserver is good to find a fanmade one to your needs.

When RO returned in the Philippines in 2017, I also returned in playing the game again.

I'm still playing it (though it is ROMSP now due to the PH server merging with Malaysia and Singapore), though every weekends now due to real life priorities.

    I Didn't Go That Far
One day of one month, beta testing began for the Korean-developed MMORPG Ragnarok Online...
    C-...cute...
Among all the foreign-made games tending toward the realistic, this game pushed the moe style, and large numbers of people all over Japan became addicted to it.
There were also numerous creators who followed the route of "I can't use the phone, but I can converse within RO."
    Aaaaaggggh...
