I'm no expert, but it seems to depend on what's written: vertical for most books/manga, formal papers and letters; and usually horizontal for online content and personal notes/diaries.. Horizontal writing is the more modern of the two

I see. It also looks like horizontal writing is read from left to right. Does that mean books written horizontally flip their pages to the left? Or do they flip their pages right and are just read from left to right?

Yes! For my limited experience, in books with horizontal-text the pages are also turned left to right, same as English. it makes more sense to read that way .

There's so much I want to say... But it'd be a waste to fill it all so soon...
    ...Fufu
Producer-san gave Mayu... and only Mayu, a diary as a gift...
I'm so happy... I'll have to use it... Very, very carefully...
What should I write about... For today...
    Then... Just for today...
    O Xth
I'll allow myself the luxury of an entire page...
Naturally the first part... Should be about how I felt when I received the diary, right...?
I was so surprised... And then... Overjoyed... To think he'd give it to me in a church, too-
Perhaps I should try writing it out on a separate paper first... Because I want to capture every memory of this day... Every last one...
    *filled....*
    Ah
    *blush...*
    *packed...*
Or maybe I should write about my work after that...?
The job Producer-san picked out for me... The lovely pink dress I wore... The way he watched me during the shoot-
    —...Ufufu, I can't decide...♪
If I write as small as possible, I can fit it all onto one page...♪
    Kya-♡
Goodness... Syoko-chan ...You didn't read any of it, did you? Mayu's secret diary...♡
    Mayu-san... Are you... Drawing something?
Oh... Diary...? So those were words... I thought for sure it was some kind of art...
