I think that it's because consuming things from the painting slowly corrupts you: before the Friends that the fruits weren't very tasty, and now they say that they are very tasty, and in the next page Scavenger says that you can "even drink a little bit" of the painted water, which implies that drinking a lot of it is not okay.
