It must be a really sad world where you can't enjoy any piece of media that features robots in any sort of way. 90% of it gender codes them to one degree or another.

Well, seeing as how there is a name for male robots (Androids) and female robot (Gynoids), you can go ask the genius scientist (and the Greeks) that coined those terms. I'm guessing you're not that big on sex robots either, but we can let that slide since they haven't been perfected yet to where Mr.Toaster and Vacuum-chan can safely deliver on the promises they were meant for.
But yes. The big reason robots tend to have gender is because humans want to do the funny like the bunnies with machines, as with everything else that have a hole (or don't).
