Looking back at this comment, is there a japanese equivalent to a knave or squire, I know samurai were attended to by trusted followers and ashigaru but is there something analogous to the Knight & squire relationship, a warrior class individual attended to by a assistant warrior-in-training?

IIRC there's no 'formal' samurai apprentice position historically. Samurais are self-obtained position by training and proving your worth, then applying to a lord to serve. Although there's always the family/recommendation route.
