I think this might be a reference to Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow.

In it, you could get Excalibur as a reward, but since Soma isn't the Destined King of the Britons, it didn't leave the stone. So if you equip it, you'll be swinging around sword, stone, and all.

Yeah, that was the first thing that came to mind for me, too.

Perhaps the actual source will shed some light on the subject?

Definitely doesn't say anything about AoS. And since there's a description of how Link came to not be able to pull the sword out, I'd say the idea came from musing about the games rather than from a reference to another game.

Anyone else here consider putting this in the "your doing it wrong" pool?
