To this day, I still wonder why how these two ended up together, despite their fighting.

I think it was because of their fighting.

I think it was because Akira needed more saiyajin characters.

It's a shame all the non-saiyajins (even Piccolo!) became pretty much worthless for fighting.

But Vegeta in his own way became pretty much useless, the only one who ever really faught got their ass kicked, but got back up was Gohan and Goku.

The Majin Boo saga is all Goku. Whenever Goku wasn't around to fight, the other all got owned, even if they could fool us to think they had a chance.

And not to go off topic by forgetting the picture, the idea behind Bulma and Vegeta getting together was explained more like, it happened because he was living at her house.
And let's face the facts, all relationships in DBZ just happen, no need for romance or attraction.

Well despite all of the fighting, he does love her. And even defends her when Goku offers the Supreme Kai (old one) a chance to make out with Bulma, to the ire of Vegeta.

If Toriyama wanted more saiyajin characters he could have had Chichi give birth to twins or even has some more saiyajins turn up out of nowhere, as happened in the (admittedly non-canon) movies and in the recent Jump anniversary OVA.

You have to consider that DB timeskips pretty freely so a lot of stuff isn't shown. IN addition, it wouldn't fit to have lovey-dovey scenes - and I'm sure that Toriyama would admit he doesn't know how to write them anyway. The only romance that is shown in DB is pretty much a guy getting pissed off and fighting harder because his girlfriend/wife is in danger.

At least Vegeta is a pretty macho guy and a proud guy. Bulma would like that. It's anybody's guess how Chichi ended up with Goku - he's only interested in training and eating, didn't even know what "marriage" was and she apparently likes scholarly, intelligent people. She must have literally had to teach him where to put his dick and all that jazz - and presumably he'd have been like "But I want to go and smash rocks up in the desert!"

Actually, Goku and Chichi have a long history from the original Dragonball series. He met her by rescuing her from kidnappers or something if I remember correctly, then later they fought in the world tournaments against each other. There's even a cheesy flashback where they kick the shit out of each other then drive off smiling together into the sunset.

At least I THINK that's how it went down, I haven't seen an episode of Dragonball or any of it's sequels in years.

Vasuki: Yeah, I've read Dragon Ball. That's where I got the thing about Goku thinking that marriage was a type of food. When they were little, when she says something like "Do you want to get married?" he says yes on the basis that they'll be getting some sort of food, as if she'd said "Do you want to get sushi?" It's just that they didn't really spend any time together (even off-screen, as it were) between then and when they actually got married at the Budokai Tenkaichi. Even though you don't see it, Bulma and Vegeta would've spent a lot of time together (years, I think).

To be honest, I think Toriyama kind of fucked all the relationship stuff up by being seemingly incapable of writing an adult female as anything but a nagging and/or psychotic bitch.

Well, I think Chi-chi's motivation to marry Goku was solely off a childhood crush, that she had many years to fantasize about a relationship with Goku without experiencing his faults. Hers was more of a one sided relationship and dream that never got crushed until her adult years/

But yeah, Vegeta and Bulma's is a bit more clear...

He may not be able to write a decent relationship, but he can write one Hell of a Shounen series.

To be fair to Toriyama, I don't think its so much to blame his writing that his characters don't have defined relationships, but moreso that the Shonen genre has so few. From anyone in Naruto/Bleach/etc to Hajime no Ippo and Prince of Tennis, Shonen characters seem to be limited to having virtually no relationships besides one sided crushes or 'hidden' romances.

In reality, Shonen characters really only end up getting into realtionships near the end of a series, such as Kenshin and Kaoru. And in that way, Toriyama actually got some of his characters in a relationship near the middle of his series (both Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball), which would make him once again a pioneer compared to most of the other authors in his genre. In this way, it really makes me wonder why other authors have to drag so much out till the end of the series, seeing as how so many of them use Dragon Ball as a model.

He probably was just using 'George Lucas' like most Americans. Just as a generic term for originator of a genre. Like how Miyazaki is always labeled the 'Disney' of Japan. It still makes no sense and both are completely wrong.

You know how Toriyama is different from Lucas though? Toriyama doesn't revive old series 4 or 5 times and ruin it. But I may be wrong.

Because Toriayama originally wanted the story to end with the defeat of Frieza, which meant Vegeta's role was supposed to end after he begged Goku to avenge all the Saiyans before dying by Frieza's beam (He was not supposed to be revived along with Krillin & the Namekians)

However, because Shounen Jump preasured him to continue with the manga, he realized one VERY important detail: If Goku had already awakened as a Super Saiyan, and now he was supposed to drag on the story with new enemies, then obviously said enemies had to be able to match a Super Saiyan...but that still means only GOku would be able to fight from now on...UNLESS...(you see where Im going?)

Be serious Teclo, they had Gohan, but they would need more than that for a longer series, so having Chichi spout multiple little monkeys to protect the Earth would've ridiculous...and remember, Saiyans were basically weak comapred with Frieza and his men, it was only because the whole "raised on Earth" thing and all they had to go through on Namek, that Goku, Gohan & Vegeta managed to reach those power levels...so just having random Saiyans who had been surviving on random corners of the universe would've also been stupid...not to mention it would have gone against what Vegeta said about him and Goku being "the last living Saiyans" (remember that Raditz, Nappa and him KNEW about "Kakarot" being on Earth, so they had means to know if and where more Saiyans could be found)

SOOO, after all things considered, what was the ONLY posible thing to do to have more Super Saiyans (credible capable fighters)? Yep, revive Vegeta and hook him up with the ONLY other "important" female character left in the story (Bulma) so she could join Chichi in the "monkey-spouting" bussiness...The End

See? Vegeta & Bulma have no complex relationship explanations that Toriyama himself admited was incapable of writing...just the simple (and credible) need for more Super Saiyans to be born. (that only ONE couple was not enough to produce)

    Add those two reasons:

She had the technology he needed to train?
He didn't need to work to provide for her ?
