In the Deluxe game for GBC, You grabbed an axe at the end of the bridge Bowser stood on to defeat him if you didn't have a Fire Flower. Obviously, Sakuya broke the bridge before Cirno could.

No offence meant here, but that someone needs to explain how Super Mario Bros ended its Castle stages is a bit depressing.
