Shrine maidens in Japanese fiction are the only people I've ever seen habitually using a broom outdoors, on unpaved ground. It seems like a pretty futile activity to me, but then again, I'm not a shrine maiden in Japanese fiction. :)

(Also, it just occurred to me that Shrine Maidens in Japanese Fiction is totally a Touhou title.)
