  • Patreon request for comparison of Western vs Japanese TRPG race settings.

The Japanese "Orcs = Pig Men" thing has become cemented over the past 10 years...
But really, Orcs are just the big strong race, which represents barbarians in the "Barbarism vs Civilization" dichotomy.

Honestly, "snu-snu" is all you needed to say under 'Girl Orc'.

Tolkien orcs are elves corrupted by weird morgotian evil sex dungeons.

WH 40K/fantasy orks are mushroom hooligans who's reproduction happen post mortem as they release spores that grow into more orks.

WoW type orcs are big tanned beefcakes who drank the kool-aid and turned green because of it. girl ork are the female of those.

Pig-men orcs DO have female but prefer to eat them and fuck other races... when they are depicted as evil. Otherwize great farmer who enjoy fried food. Brakk "burito" Brokk is likely this type of orc.

At this point I'm wondering if it should be a pool. height_difference doesn't really cut it.

What about the Elder scroll orcs who aren’t actually Orcs at all but just deformed elves? Actually, most of the races in Elder scroll are just deformed or mutated elves. The race and origin of the “men” race is also up for debates where they’re really from.

Only resorts to violence when they feel like it

This is probably the funniest description of Warhammer Orks I've ever read.

As per the Silmarillion, those elves "who came into the hands of Melkor … by slow arts of cruelty were corrupted and enslaved; and thus did Melkor breed the hideous race of the Orcs in envy and mockery of the Elves, of whom they were afterwards the bitterest foes."

Then, if you didn't know how hideous Orcs were, you check out how Tolkien describes them in Letter #210, where they are "squat, broad, flat-nosed, sallow-skinned, with wide mouths and slant eyes: in fact degraded and repulsive versions of the (to Europeans) least lovely Mongol-types," and uhh, it seems Tolkien let the Yellow Peril of his youth influence how he imagined them.

Damn, the Yellow Peril was strong back then. The description sounds more like a troglodyte than a person...

It's not wrong, but it's misleading in the most funniest way possible.

Tolkien never quite settled on where orcs came from. At some points, he wanted them to be an all-evil race that were created by Morgoth directly or from slime (like the movies did it because it was the least offensive option here), but then he also wanted to make it so there was only one creator god who could create anything with a soul or mind. Then there was the "tortured elves" option, but it runs into a problem when you ask how that population could have survived generations of constant warfare after Morgoth was done away with. Tolkien presented them as all male and all warriors because he didn't want to make them sympathetic in any way by letting them have a society and elderly and women and children to feel bad about exterminating (see all the D&D alignment arguments about whether it's ethical to commit genocide against races that are "typically evil"), but then he also didn't like the implication that left that all orcs past the first generation would need to be products of rape, either. He also didn't want them to be completely evil and incapable of redemption because they had a loving creator god ultimately, although he also never exactly showed that in any way in his works. He eventually settled on there being good orcs who raise families and live quiet happy lives out there somewhere having faith in their Christian god with the serial numbers filed off, but for some reason, only the complete opposite of those orcs, who are slaves of Sauron or Saruman, actually show up.

Basically, the problems with creating an "always chaotic evil" race of humanoids if you stop to think about them at all is that they very quickly start to declare Their Species Doth Protest Too Much, to use the TV Tropes phrase for it.

The Japanese version of orcs, incidentally, comes to us from 1st edition D&D. There, they very much were still in the "basically mongol raiders but also man-pigs" edition of orcs (sometimes called "P'orcs" by the greybeards) with pig-like snouts. Also, kobolds in 1e were dog-like creatures, which is why, even though D&D settled on "little dragon" kobolds in later editions, a lot of Japanese works use "kobold" to refer to doggo-people (or in the case of Suikoden, use it as a blanket term for basically any kind of "furry", including Donald Duck-like "kobolds").

The orcs are elves, the dwarves are elves, the men are elves, even the fucking cat people are occasionally elves. The only race that isn't elves is the Argonians.
