Ashitaba Type 8 Sniper Rifle. Mass-production top-break revolver rifle. Full length 145cm; much lighter than it appears due to the frame's 60% wood construction. Fully disassembles into 78 parts with 1 internally housed spare barrel. Two types of ammunition are available; a standard round and an armor piercing fin stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS) design. Ammunition capacity is 8 rounds. The APFSDS rounds require caution as they generate nearly 8 times as much energy as a standard round and require a barrel change after 3 shots. Effective range of 600m, maximum range of 1800m. Scope is a meager 6x model.

It is, indeed. Seems inspired from the M8A1. But is it a new gun or a real one, I don't know.

Looks like a Tau pulse rifle from Warhammer 40k to me.

I removed the railgun tag from this post and post #436883 as I've seen no evidence of such a design.

The artist admits that they are not a firearms expert (neither am I) and some of their logic is faulty but aesthetically it's a nice design. As an example, the reason that APFSDS rounds damage barrels is not due to an increased amount of energy but instead due to the fins damaging the rifling.

There's no reason the fins would damage the rifling, because of the discarding sabot part of the system. The projectile is contained in a multipiece shell that falls apart upon exiting the barrel, leaving only the finned projectile on the path to the target. Search "sabot" on Google images, you'll see what I mean.

They don't deliver more energy either, they deliver a better ability to pierce armor because of how the mass is arranged behind a smaller point. To get more energy, you'd increase the powder charge, which would make the gun explode if it wasn't already capable of firing that much energy. Wood is also not particularly light when it's hanging a foot in front of your hands. He did do a decent job of drawing the sabot.

The revolver also seems to be far enough away from your hands that it wouldn't hurt you to shoot a rifle in this configuration.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mc-255_shotgun is also much more beautiful.

Not quite. "APFSDS can still be fired from rifled guns but the sabot is of a modified design incorporating bearings to isolate the spin of the sabot in the barrel from the round itself, so far as practicable. Rifled guns have been kept in use by some nations (the UK and India, for example) because they are able to fire other ammunition such as HESH rounds with greater accuracy. However, the rifling wears down under regular APFSDS use and requires more maintenance. For these reasons the British Challenger 2 is being trialled with a Rheinmetall 120mm smoothbore gun."

    Friction, baby!

No. They have bearings in the Challenger APFSDS because fin stabilized ammunition is fin stabilized, not spin stabilized.

In fact, a spin would make it less stable, so they put bearings on the sabot, so the bearings can spin and the sabot, and the projectile stay stable.

The sabot itself is usually plastic, and a rifled barrel that's designed to take a jacketed bullet traveling through it at 3000 fps couldn't give two shits about it.

The increased round energy is probably from a stronger charge, and a charge so powerful could also indeed warp the barrel pretty quickly. So that seems accurate enough...

As for the wood, it appears to be teak or perhaps maple. Both are hard and provide sturdy construction, and are relatively light compared to most steels and especially iron.

Also not a firearms expert, but if an M16 can effectively fire on a person-sized target out to 500m with iron sights, I'm pretty sure this rifle could handle farther.
    Also pardon my super-bump.

But it's a discarding sabot, so the fins wouldn't damage the barrel, they'd unfold as the sabot fell away outside of the gun.
